The goal of the New Music for Kids and Teens project is to involve children and young people from all over Slovakia in actively exploring contemporary music.
We want::
- to bring contemporary musical language to the lowest level of specialized music education in Slovakia – ZUŠ
- actively involve children and youth in the realization of new scores
- to attract new listeners and performers of contemporary music
- to provide a means of learning about contemporary music from European and non-European nations
A means of implementation
This idea is to create a database of children’s songs by contemporary composers. The idea behind its creation is mainly the fact that music school teachers, despite their interest, often struggle with the lack and unavailability of contemporary music literature intended for children.
The works published in our database are freely accessible even to the youngest performers and their teachers. Those interested will find compositions of varying technical difficulty, content focus, and a wide variety of styles of contemporary classical music.
Works published
in our database they are freely accessible even to the smallest performers and their teachers. Those interested will find compositions of varying technical difficulty, content focus, and a wide variety of styles of contemporary classical music.
An important part of our project is the new concert cycle Portraits, in which works by contemporary authors will be interpreted by children and young artists. The concerts will be held at art schools throughout Slovakia. The basis of the concert dramaturgy will consist of works published in the database. The first Portraits took place in Slovakia on November 3, 2011.
The culmination of these events
There will be 60 concerts throughout Slovakia called Portraits. A selection concert performed by children’s performers will also take place during the opening ceremony of the global festival ISCM World New Music Days 2013 in Košice, which for the first time in history is co-organized by the International Society for Contemporary Music – Slovak Section (ISCM).
We want to support the creativity of teachers working at primary and secondary art schools through seminars and commented concerts. We will present fascinating intersections of 20th century music, we will provide an overall view of contemporary musical creation and will also comprehensively address the specifics of children’s creation and the interpretation of contemporary compositions.
The New Music For Kids and Teens project was created thanks to the support of the European Capital of Culture, Košice 2013, n.o.
